Purpose

Assessment - students are to design and develop an interactive product to address diversity in a user population. Students are to demonstrate the application of relevant concepts in building and testing a working prototype of their design concept.

Requirement chosen: Falls prevention app

Internationally, falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury (after traffic injuries) with approximately 37.3 million falls leading to medical intervention, and over 680,000 fall related fatalities (WHO, 2001).

In Australia, approximately 30% of people aged over 65 years fall annually with a 10% chance of injury. As people age, fall related fatalities increase i.e., 18 fatalities per 100,000 for people aged 65-84 years old increasing to 81 fatalities per 100,000 people aged 85 years or more (ACSQHC, 2009).

Nearly half (49%) of falls requiring hospitalisation occur in the home and make up 80% of overnight hospital admissions. Falls are also a major cause of admissions to residential aged care facilities where a further 22% of falls requiring hospitalisation occur in those facilities (ACSQHC, 2009).

Brief

Requirements chosen: Falls prevention app: This app can provide tips and exercises for older people to improve their balance and reduce the risk of falls. It can also detect falls and alert emergency contacts.

Result

The Falls Prevention App prototype and supporting documentation achieved an assessment result of 97/100 and contributed towards a High Distinction for Human Factors for Interaction Design (11054).
